BonaireRocks.com is a
website dedicated to this small island in the southern Caribbean known as “Diver's Paradise”. Our site tells you about all the things that we dearly love about the island and the many reasons that keep us coming back!
If you were to ask me why I like to vacation on Bonaire, I would probably say that the quietness of this caribbean island is one of the main attractions for me but my husband and son would probably disagree and say the diving is the best thing (at least for them). If you're looking for lots of action and nightlife, then this isn't the place for you. Another nice thing about the island is the type of currency that is used there.
My family and I have been going there for the past twelve years and have come to love the island and the people that live there. It's a very small island and even though that's part of it's charm, the drawback to this is the fact that it's sometimes difficult to actually get there. There are not a lot of flights to the island but once you arrive and get back into the spirit of the island, you realize that it has been worth it.
I love to lay on the beach or by the pool with a good book and just stare at the beautiful skies. The fluffy white clouds against a brilliant blue sky is something I never tire of looking at. In the evening, if conditions are just right, you may even be able to get a glimpse of the
green flash.
I don't think I had ever heard of Bonaire before we started to plan that first trip. I had heard of the ABC islands but I would have been hard pressed to name them at that time. My husband was newly certified in scuba diving and wanted to test his skills in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean. He did his research and decided that Bonaire would be a good choice because of it's reputation for being “Diver's Paradise.” We contacted a travel agent that specializes in dive vacations and booked our first visit.
Before our first trip to Bonaire, the only other Caribbean island that I had visited was Jamaica and to compare the two islands is like comparing apples and oranges. Whereas Jamaica is green and lush, Bonaire is more of an arid island that is full of
cacti, sand and more cacti. That's not to say that there aren't lush green areas there, they just aren't as prevalent.
Since we were staying on a dive property on our first trip and didn't have a rental car, we really didn't get a good feel of the island at that time. It was on subsequent trips that we started to feel it's magic. Honestly, I don't know how you ever get to know a place if you confine yourself to one small area so now we always rent a vehicle for the time we are there and that allows us much more freedom.
Without the use of a rental vehicle, we probably never would have been able to see some of the interesting sight that Bonaire has to offer such as the salt mounds where they process sea salt for sale.
Some of the things I like about the island:
The weather.
The people
The views
Taking walks on the promenade
The restaurants.
I also enjoy seeing the free-roaming iguanas, goats and donkeys all over the island. Actually, you don't see nearly as many donkeys roaming around as you could at one time. Many of the donkeys have been rounded up and are now in the
donkey sanctuary which is located close to the airport.
